Why is teaching important to me?
I believe that as a teacher, I have the responsibility of providing our students with the necessary tools to be productive members of society. Many of our students are the first in their family to graduate from middle school and go on to high school. For me, being at San Miguel is one of the most rewarding experiences in my many years as an educator.
What is my favorite memory of being a teacher?
When I first began at San Miguel, it was in the middle of the 2012-2013 school year. Our classes are gender separated at each grade level. I remember being told “Beware of the 7th grade boys”. I asked that no one tell me anything about them, because I wanted to form my own opinion. That group of boys became my high achievers that year. I chaperoned them on field trips and watched as they learned new concepts. I even found one of them to be a great chess player. Many of those young men have now graduated from college or have formed their own companies.
How do I encourage parents to support their children in education?
At San Miguel, we have Learning Team Meetings four times a year. At this time, all of the teachers of each student meet with the parents to discuss the progress made by their child. During those meetings, we give our parents ideas of ways they can help their child at home.
What are some of my favorite school traditions?
At San Miguel, we go to Mass every Friday morning at St. Francis Xavier Church. Our classes are divided into two groups at each grade level of 6th, 7th and 8th. Each week, a different class is in charge of planning and practicing the readings. By Friday morning, they are ready to participate in Mass.
What is my favorite book to either read or assign to students?
One of my favorite authors of books that appeal to our demographic is Matt de la Pena. Several of his books are relatable to our students, but one that is most enjoyable is
