To be declared a “Doctor of the Church”, an individual must be someone of eminent learning, a high degree of sanctity, and a formal proclamation by the Church either by a General Council or by the Successor of St. Peter. In 2012 Pope Benedict XVI declared two individuals as “Doctors of the Church”. This short course traces through a series of short biographies the lives and contributions of the 35 men and women who are the Doctors of the Church.
