Marriage is the intimate, exclusive, indissoluble communion of life and love, entered by man and woman at the design of the Creator. Marriage is for the good of the couple and for the procreation and education of children.
In other words, God invented marriage, not man. By creating us male and female, God inscribed the call to marriage into our very being. This is not true just for Catholics but for all persons. It’s the way we were made.
When a baptized man and woman marry, their marriage is raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. Much more than just a contract, it is a covenant between a husband and wife. As such, the love between a husband and wife should point to the love God has for his people. By faithfully living their marriage covenant, couples help build the Kingdom of God by making manifest his love.
