Seminarian Daniel Gormley was ordained as a Transitional Deacon on Friday, May 28, 2021 by Bishop David Konderla at Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa.
For most transitional deacons, the year leading to priesthood is a pastoral, liturgical and educational preparation period. In addition to expanded faculties during Mass, a transitional deacon makes three promises: to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, Obedience and Celibacy. The Liturgy of the Hours (also know as the Breviary), is prayer consisting of three psalms, a Scripture reading and petitions, and is a participation in the Perpetual Liturgy going on in Heaven. At the same time, through the Liturgy of the Hours, the secular hours of the day and night on earth are sanctified.
Both permanent and transitional deacons make a promise to obey their bishop and his successors. Transitional deacons also forego any exclusive relationships in order to love the Church with his whole being.
Deacon Gormley's home parish is Saint John Before the Latin Gate in Bartlesville. God willing, Deacon Gormley will be ordained a priest in June 2022.
